Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets

When these came out, a lot of people were going crazy over them. I admit the bright shades, the cute rectangular packaging and the price (I think I got these for around <12€) charmed me. I’ve had Frambourjoise for a few months and Nude-ist and Grand Cru for a few weeks.

These are described as “the new era of lipstick”: its soft, melting texture glides on to the lips and turns into a matt, velvety and incredibly light colour. Lips are left smooth and soft as velvet. Enriched with evanescent oils, it’s incredibly sensuous formula provides a soft, second-skin feel, without drying or fading lips. (according to bourjois.co.uk).

The doe foot applicator isn’t the best for precision and it’s a bit complicated to get it on without having to do a lot of damage control after (q tips are your friend) but once you get over that they’re really nice lipsticks. Now, the formula is really good. It doesn’t show up as nicely on swatches but they do glide on effortlessly and mostly evenly.

Grand Cru took a bit more work to get on evenly but it gives an opaque coverage. It isn’t as sticky as Nude-ist and it allows for more re-application without being too drying.

Nude-ist has the best formula and coverage, as well as the easiest and fastest application. It goes on opaque in just one swipe and it gives you this amazing texture on the lips. It doesn’t last the 24h they promise but, seriously, who wants lipstick for that long. Its biggest problem is re-application and stickiness. If you do more than a couple coats it goes sticky and it settles into the lines of my lips. It is very drying on me.

Frambourjoise has this amazing bright colour. It’s not sticky and it allows for re-application. It’s a bit too bright for me though.

They’re all very comfortable to wear and they look amazing once on. One bad thing they all share is this very unpleasant smell. It goes away after applying it but upon opening it you’re invaded with this iron-y smell… I almost returned mine thinking it had gone bad.

Overall:

Pros: amazing colour payoff and coverage, very opaque, beautiful colours, easy application and very easy to carry around, comfortable to wear, matte

Cons: unpleasant smell, re-application problems, drying on the lips, doe foot isn’t very precise
